SRT subtitles over online mp4 video playback

Today I encountered a strange issue, however I solved it and the client was happy. Many of our customers are from non-English backgrounds, like Spanish and various European languages. So enabling subtitles for online video playback for various languages is sometimes hard and nonspecific characters are not properly displayed. For example, these ones (like ‘¿’, ‘á’, etc) are either not displayed or are substituted by a non-Latin character.

The problem is that whenever we save a .srt file (most probably on Notepad), it gets saved with the default English character set. However each language has their own default character set and the set can be used with any advanced text editor like Notepad++. The following are the steps:

1) So first of all search for a desired language character set. One can search for character encoding by googling it or by using the Wikipedia link below :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_encoding

2)Then save the subtitled .srt files under that language character set by using any advanced text editor – for example in Notepad++ in the top upper menu : click on “Encoding” >> “Character set” and here one can select from various character encodings.

3) Save the file and then upload the .srt file for the video.
